My first choice is a Rubber Boa, but Washington has some pretty strict laws regarding those, so I’m going to go for a Rosy Boa.

I’m not sure if I’m even going to get a snake or not, but it is a consideration right now.

Kinja'd!!!

I need a snake to accompany my beard for maximum Middle Eastern-ness.

Also for many danger noodle boops.

I have a friend with a corn snake and a cat that gives zero fucks about said corn snake. It’s possible.

You can feed it spiders.

Or maybe they'll make spider/snake hybrids. Sniders... Or Spikes.

I want a corn snake, I have some lizards. They’ll run away if you try to boop them though.

You may find the spider eats it, my Dogs got excited last week about something in the basement. I checked out what they were looking at and found a baby snake stuck in a spiders web. At that point the snake was still struggling. An hour or so later I checked in and the snake was dead, and the spider was beginning to wrap up it's kill. Spider got a big meal, and save me having to take the snake out of the house.

You can have all the snakes that come into my house. Mostly ring necks, although I had what looked to be a hog nose snake a couple weeks ago. At least of the snakes native to NY that's what it looked most like.

Not trying to troll, but genuinely curious... Why have a thing stuck in a box it's whole life just so you can look at it? I never understood having snakes/fish/turtles/lizards/etc... It just seems cruel, and I'm no hippie. What are the benefits of ownership for having these?

There was a guy in my dorm room who had a boa. He named it Rocky Balboa Constrictor. We used to sit around and drink and watch when he threw a mouse in there.

I have fish. You are mostly right that the most I can do is look at them. But for me, the enjoyment of an aquarium is all about the set up and maintenance. I grow live plants in my tank and it’s taken me years to figure out how to do it. So for me, it’s much like why someone would want a garden. It’s a nice addition to my dining room. People love it. They come in and stare at all the stuff that’s going on inside. There’s baby fish, and snails, and shrimps, and all kinds of little things in various stages of life. If all you’ve ever been exposed to is a glass box with gravel, water, and some fish, I can see why you don’t see the magic. Google “planted tanks”.

I think another part of why I like it, is it shows that I am capable of taking care of something over time. I created it, and have tended to it, and you can see that my plants are healthy and flourishing, my fish are happy and swimming around. It says to those who come over: “I can do more than the minimum”

As to snakes, snakes are totally different. I have never had one but snakes are pets that can come out of the cage and play with you. They have personalities. They will chill with you on the couch in a way not completely dissimilar to a dog.

Completely dissimilar to a dog. A dog can be taught to do stuff. A dog has been domesticated for 1000's of years to work together with humans. Ever see a drug sniffing snake? How about a snake that can do a single trick, or follow a command?

The poor things jammed in a glass box have it rough, no matter how many rocks and plants there are. You wouldn’t put a cat or a dog in a small box would you? No. Because that’s not how they are supposed to live. Just like so called “exotic” pets. Pretty cruel if you ask me. And no, I’m not some PETA wierdo. Those guys can all drown, lol.

Not trying to preach, btw.

I mean, I’m not trying to get into an internet fight over it, but I chose my words carefully. By “not completely dissimilar” I meant a snake will chill on/with you while you watch tv in the same way a dog might. Also, specifically speaking about snakes, many tend to just hang around in trees or down holes anyway, so you’re projecting your own desires on them by saying they shouldn’t be in a box.

As to tricks: http://lmgtfy.com/?q=snakes+doin…

I also agree that the enclosure for an animal should be large enough. Not simply “jammed” in there. People put dogs and cats in boxes barely big enough for them to turn around. You’re familiar with crating right? You seem to be arguing against any sort of domestication with how things are “supposed” to live. Which, if you are, that’s fine. It could be a noble stance to take.

Lol! I knew as I typed the words I was sounding preachy, which is not my intention. I’m all for to each his own. I’ve just always been curious as to what the rewards are to owning these types of animals. I have had friends over the years keep all sorts of crazy “pets”, and just never got it. I look at pets like they are supposed to be your buddies, not a display item, which is why when I see a dog owner who just keeps the thing on a chain in the yard all the time, I’m confused as to why they even bother with the food/medical bills.

Which is why I tried to explain that a snake can be your buddy. My fish are pretty much for display. Though I like to think I have given them a nice life, I don’t have much of a “relationship” with them. Though I do care for them... it’s complicated I guess.

I also agree that dogs that are kept as “status symbols” and not as companions is terrible. More terrible than keeping a lizard or something as a display, imho, since the dog is so capable of emotion.
